Systematically,Formic Acid is known as methanoic acid.It isthe simplest carboxylic acid, and has the chemical formula HCOOH. It is an important intermediate in chemical synthesis.It is widely used for Organic synthetic reagent, watertreatment products, apparel footwear care products.

In nature,Formic Acid is found in most ants and in stingless bees of the genusoxytrigond. A major use of formic acid is as a preservative and antibacterialagent I livestock feed.

Formic acidis also significantly used in the production of leather -incl. tanning-(23% of the global consumption in 2009) and in dying and finishing of textile (9% of theglobal consumption in 2009) because of its acidic nature. Use as a coagulant in the production of rubber constituted in 20096% of the global consumption.

Formic acidis also used in place of mineral acids for various cleaning products, suchas limescale removerand toilet bowl cleaner. Someformate esters areartificial flavorings or perfumes. Beekeepers useformic acid as a miticide against the tracheal mite (Acarapiswoodi) and the Varroa mite. Theuse of formic acid in fuel cells is alsounder investigation.
